Michael @ SMAPxSMAP - June 5th 2006 - Fuji TV TRANSCRIPT (thanks to Hippoko)
SMAP members are standing, totally mystified by what has happened. The music which they were singing to was suddenly stopped. Shingo Katori is lying on the floor because he got upset.
There is a writing on top left, saying “Michael appears in SMAPxSMAP as a total surprise to the members!”
Narrator: Now the meeting of a lifetime!
Masahiro Nakai: Who’s there?
Staff: Sorry, but it is somebody special.
“Beat It” starts playing.
Michael is waving at the SMAP members from upstairs.
SMAP members are standing, dropping jaws. Looking at Michael making a peace sign, they make peace signs, too.
Michael descends the stairs to the studio.
Clapping from the people in the studio. SMAP members do not know how to react.
SMAP: “This is impossible!” “I am getting goose bumps (meaning this is too great a sensation)!!!” “WOW WOW WOW”
Michael touches SMAP members’ hands with his.
The Japanese writing on top left says, “Michael comes to SMAPxSMAP!”
Nakai: Michael Jackson?
Michael Jackson’s name is on the screen.
Nakai: Michael Jackson? Michael Jackson?
Michael: Yeah.
Members: Really? Hello.
Takuya Kimura (in green T-shirt): You are not the impersonator from Roppongi (a popular district in Tokyo), are you?
Members still cannot believe that Michael is here.
Nakai: Are you really Michael Jackson?
Michael: Yes. Very happy to be here. I enjoyed the performance. It was very nice. (Japanese interpreter translates what Michael says.)
Members: Unbelievable!
Nakai: So, our music was stopped because Michael Jackson came to the studio, wasn’t it?
Kimura: Of course they would stop the music (if Michael comes in). The music should be stopped.
Kimura: So, the staff knew all along that Michael was watching us perform, didn’t they?
Michael: Yes, I enjoyed it, very much.
Kimura: Oh, common, (the staff tricked us)!
Goro Inagaki (in while long-sleeved shirt) is smiling and in happy spirits.
Nakai: Would you like to sit here?
Kimura: Let’s change the music. Let’s play “We Are the World”.
Nakai: Tell me, tell me, what brought you here? Is this the right microphone? Should I use this microphone? Can I talk without microphone, can I?
Staff’s voice: You can talk without the microphone.
Nakai: So, I can talk without the microphone.
Kimura: We don’t need any microphone. Our spirits are sky high and we do not need any microphone. It’s OK.
Nakai: So, what brought you here today?
(Translator makes a slight mistake in translation here, and asks Michael, “How did you get here?”)
Michael: Oh, we drove today, to see you. We drove to see you. To surprise you.
Loud clapping from the staff.
Michael: We enjoyed it.
Michael shakes hands with Nakai.
Nakai: Your hand is very beautiful.
Michael: Oh, God bless you (shakes hands with Nakai again).
Michael: Now, I am very happy to be here in Japan, and I think you are wonderful, lovely people. I mean it. Thank you for accepting me. Really.
Nakai: What is happening here?
Kimura: This is what we call “too big surprise”.
Nakai: I cannot host this program anymore (from too much excitement).
Nakai: I do not know how to proceed with the show. My mind is not working properly.
Kimura: What I think is this. The moment Michael entered the studio, you, Nakai, directly returned to yourself who went to Michael’s concert with us as a passionate fan. All you have experienced since then is somehow suspended right now.
Nakai: I just don’t know how to react. I cannot react.
Kimura: I see you can’t.
Translator says “They are happy to see you.”
Michael: Likewise.
Nakai: I cannot think of what to ask. I am totally unprepared. Do you know about us?
Michael: (Pointing at the background of the studio) It’s beautiful.
Kimura: This is called LED, a new technology we recently started using. (SMAP uses LED for their concerts, too.)
Nakai: But this device gets out of order from time to time.
Nakai: Noise gets in sometimes.
Kimura: Can I ask a question to the staff? When we were rehearsing, you told us that there were noises and we had to rehearse again. That was a lie, wasn’t it?
Nakai: You don’t need to ask question to the staff now. Let’s talk with Michael Jackson more. You are Michael Jackson, aren’t you? (He still cannot believe it.)
Katori: Me, please. When I saw Michael on the stage of the Tokyo Dome when I was 10, 11 years old, I promised myself that I would stand on the same stage as you in future. And we could do the concerts in the Tokyo Dome.
Michael: Oh, God bless you.
Michael shakes hands with Katori.
Katori: Thank you so much.
Clapping.
Katori: I can stop working from tomorrow (now that my dream has come true).
Michael laughs.
Nakai: Let’s introduce ourselves. Self-introduction. OK? Self-introduction.
Tsuyoshi Kusanagi (in yellow parker): My name is Tsuyoshi Kusanagi.
Michael and Kusanagi shake hands.
Inagaki: Goro, Goro Inagaki.
Nakai: He does your impersonation as “Oshinobi Goro (Goro incognito).” He does sketches as Michael Jackson, and he is going to show it a little to you.
Inagaki stands up.
Kimura: Oh, we the members feel so embarrassed to see this in front of Michael Jackson. Our stomachs are turning.
Nakai explains to Michael: We will show you. We have a series of sketch called “Oshinobi Goro” or “Oshinobi Michael (Michael incognito)”.
“Oshinobi Michael” clip, in which Inagaki impersonates Michael, is shown on the screen.
Narrator: “Oshinobi Michael” is now revived after ten years now, in front of Michael Jackson himself.
Nakai: So, you should show it to Michael.
Inagaki: I had the privilege of impersonating Mr. Michael Jackson. Could you have a look?
Inagaki impersonates Michael.
Michael looks very much amused by this and enthusiastically claps hands.
Nakai: You got laughter from Michael! You got laughter from Michael!
Kimura: I think Michael understands. He is kind enough to go along with us. Michael is reading the air (meaning Michael understands their admiration for him).
Nakai: Michael’s laughter!
Inagaki: I respect you SO much!
Nakai: Let’s continue the self-introduction.
Kimura: Nice to meet you. My name is Takuya Kimura.
Michael and Kimura shake hands.
Katori: I am glad to meet you. My name is Shingo.
Michael shakes hands with Shingo.
Katori: I love you.
Michael: I love you, too.
Nakai: Did you now anything about SMAP?
Michael: I learned about them today. I enjoyed what I saw upstairs. Very very good. I just wanted to surprise you and say thank you so much for having me and God bless you and good luck on everything.
Michael shakes hands with members again.
Nakai: I like you.
Michael: I like you, too. I like you, too.
Nakai: Are you already going? Is this bye-bye?
Michael shakes hands with members.
Michael: (Looking at the background) This is great. (Walking around the studio)
Nakai: (Shouting to the staff) You should change the image on the screen for Michael. Can’t you move the image for him?
Kimura: Now, Mr. Michael Jackson is impressed by the work done by the engineers in our program. (It is said on the screen in Japanese, “Michael is showing interest in LED”)
The image of LED starts moving.
Kimura: You probably should look at it from some distance.
Shingo: Michael is asking who made this.
Michael: Thank you, thank you. (Waving at the people in the studio)
SMAP members and Michael say bye-bye to each other, shake hands again.
Members: Thank you, Michael.
Michael: God bless you.
Members: Love and Peace!
Michael: Peace! Love you!
Members: See you next time.
Michael: OK. See you next time.
Michael leaves the studio.
Narrator: Michael’s visit took the studio by storm.
SMAP members see Michael off. Katori: His sunglasses are so cool.
Michael disappears upstairs.
Michael leaves the studio, making peace sign to the SMAP members. SMAP members just cannot believe what they have experienced now.
Inagaki (in long-sleeved white shirt): This is impossible.
Katori (in purpule shirt): This is impossible. This is impossible. This is impossible.
Nakai (in pink shirt): Oh, what a petty existence we are.
Kimura (in green shirt): This is incredible; our program SumaSuma (abbreviation for SMAPxSMAP)… has reached an extraordinary stage.
Nakai: Now that we have seen Michael, nobody would surprise us anymore.
Katori: Really, Michael was here…
Nakai: (Pointing at Inagaki) Michael liked your impersonation. I’m so jealous. I am sure you left the strongest impression on Michael. Stronger than any other member.
Inagaki: I made it! I am so glad I had done Michael’s impersonation in the program.
Kimura: Did you give out 120% of yourself (meaning “Did you do the very best”) for Michael?
Inagaki: Of course I did. But it was very difficult and embarrassing to me.
Members laugh.
Inagaki: I had to do it, but it was not at all easy for me, you know. It is easy for you to say that I should do my best, (but it was very hard).
Nakai: This was different from other situations where somebody happens to see his/her own impersonation by chance.
Inagaki: Yes, it was wildly different.
Katori: Inagaki did the impersonation because Michael himself came here.
Katori: Oh, I feel I am finished.
Nakai: I said, “Michael Jackson?” “Michael Jackson.”
Kimura: Yes, you said to Michael Jackson himself, “Michael Jackson?” Yeah, I remember that very well.
Nakai: But I didn’t know what to say after that…
Kimura: So, what happened to our song which we were filming?
Staff: The song was filmed.
(Katori: So, it was filmed all right.)
Kimura: So, the song was already filmed. Although you had finished filming the song, you told us that there was a technical problem to be settled because (Michael was there).
(Katori: Michael was watching us.)
Nakai: It is just great (that Michael was watching us).
Katori: Oh, it is really fantastic.
Nakai: Let’s sit down and talk.
SMAP members sit on the floor.
Nakai: Michael Jackson made all of us, the five members of the SMAP so excited.
Kimura: Not only us. The people in the whole studio.
Katori: I feel I cannot go home. I will not be able to stay alone in the house (from too much excitement).
Nakai: We just cannot compare anyone else with Michael Jackson. Michael Jackson was the greatest for all of us.
Katori: Michael was “the top” for all of us.
Inagaki and Nakai: Yes, for all of us.
Inagaki: We went to see Michael’s live performances together.
Kimura: Yes, (we were just following him), like “Michael! Michael!”
Inagaki: We went to the Dome, didn’t we?
Katori: Yes, we went to the Dome.
Nakai: We saw him so many times.
Nakai: Now, I am regaining myself. I start to realize what Michael has meant to me. I have so many of Michael’s CDs and DVDs. Just incredible.
Katori: How many of the staff knew that Michael would visit us? Did all of you know? What about you, the people with cameras? So, you knew! What about the voice-recording team? You knew! So, everybody knew what was going to happen.
People in the studio laugh.
Katori: It is really scary. You people were all good actors. Making the screen on the background start to go wrong, and so on.
Kimura nods.
Katori: The LED was giving a good acting, too. So, in fact, there was nothing wrong with the LED, wasn’t there? The colors were all right, weren’t they? I remember Nakai was saying, “If you cannot fix the LED within 15 minutes, let’s just forget about shooting today.” If we had stopped shooting then, we could not have met Michael.
Everybody laughs.
Nakai: I am glad we stayed. I remember the staff refused to say who was coming at first. He said, “I cannot tell.” When I said, “What?” he just said “I cannot tell anything.” I was perplexed. What did he mean by “I cannot tell.”? When I asked again, “Who is there?”, the staff said “Look there, please.” And, the music and Michael.
Laughter
Nakai: I was so shocked.
Kimura: Sing the beginning of the song.
Nakai: (Singing) Haruiro no sutsu ni…(meaning; Changing into spring-coloured suits)…
Nakai is clearly embarrassed.
Kimura: Michael was listening to you, taking rhythm.
Michael’s image of listening to their song is shown, at the bottom right.
Nakai: I am so embarrassed that I could cry. I should have sung more stylishly.
Nakai: If they had asked me, I would have included the moonwalk in the singing.
Michael’s moonwalk is shown, at the bottom right.
Katori: I am glad to see that you are regaining your normal self, Nakai-kun (Note. “kun” in Japanese means something like “Mr.”).
Everybody laughs.
Nakai: You bet.
Nakai: How did you feel, finding Michael up there for the first time?
Nakai: Did it cross your mind that it must be an impersonator?
Katori: I thought it might be an impersonator, or the impersonator of an impersonator… I just could not believe what I was seeing and I tried desperately to find the right explanation of this extraordinary happening. My mind lost direction. I was just so confused.
Michael’s image of coming into the studio is shown at the bottom right.
Kimura: When I saw him going down the stairs, I was still wondering if it was real Michael.
Kimura: Please do not trick us anymore.
Katori: If Michael would come again now, we would again get confused.
Nakai: We would be surprised all over again.
Nakai: We were just discussing that all what was left for this program was to receive Michael and, all along, I believed he would not come to us. I never thought he would turn up.
Inagaki: I never thought he would come.
Nakai: Oh, I want to be in the photograph with Michael.
NARRATOR: The members reflected upon their meeting with Michael in this way. Then, they decided to present their autographed CD to Michael. They made up their mind to take the CD with them and visit Michael’s dressing room. They wanted to express their gratitude to Michael.
Kimura: Shall we go to see Michael now? Doesn’t what I have just said sound great? “Shall we go to see Michael now?”
Nakai: I think it sounds strange.
Kimura: Let’s just say, “Shall we go to see Michael, now?”
Laughter.
Kimura: Isn’t this great? This is reality. Can you believe it?
Nakai: Let’s go, shall we?
Inagaki: If I were alone, I would never have the courage to go (as Michael is too great). Never.
SMAP walk to Michael’s dressing room to give their present. Katori says, as he walks, that it was worth doing the program for a long time (the show started more than 10 years ago). Kimura repeats, “Shall we go to see Michael?”
NARRATOR: SMAP members go into Michael’s dressing room to give Michael a present as a token of their gratitude. They look a little nervous.
The blue door to the dressing room shuts.
NARRATOR: After this, SMAP members spent a dreamy time with Michael, who they have admired and respected so much.
SMAP members see Michael off. Michael walks ahead of them. SMAP members keep on chatting about how excited they were.
Nakai tries to guard Michael from the SP.
NARRATOR: SMAP are turning to bodyguards of Michael Jackson.
Michael receives presents from his fans.
Nakai: Now, Michael is leaving, clear the way.
Michael waves to the fans and go into the van. SMAP members repeat “Thank you.”
Michael leaves.
NARRATOR: So the dreamy time with Michael ended. Nakai says,
Nakai: Michael’s van has Shinagawa (place name in Tokyo) plate.
Kimura: No, no, that van does not belong to Michael.
NARRATOR: Thus, the mega-superstar Michael Jackson left.
NARRATOR: SMAP members, still excited from the meeting, returned to Michael’s dressing room, where they had been with Michael until just a while ago, and decided to talk a little.
SMAP members sit on the sofa and armchairs.
Inagaki: We talked about the Tokyo Dome, didn’t we? Kimura told Michael that we did concerts there, and Michael was interested.
Kimura: Michael kindly accepted our present, and, when we asked if we could have his autograph, he gave his autographs to each of us.
Katori: With our names on them.
KATORI shows the CD with Michael’s autograph.
KATORI: Michael was sitting on the sofa, and each of us went to Michael, one by one, sat next to him, and saw Michael writing his autograph on the CD.
Kimura: Michael sat on this sofa, just around the space between Kusanagi (in yellow parker) and I are sitting right now.
Kimura: I thought of sitting on exactly the same place as where Michael sat, but I couldn’t dare. You know, when I thought of sitting where Michael sat, my body reacted like, “No, it’s not where you should sit.”
NARRATOR: So, the members received presents from Michael. Then something unexpected was revealed.
Nakai: Well, my name should be spelt NAKAI, but Michael wrote TAKAI.
Members start calling Nakai, “Takai-kun (meaning Mr. Takai)”
Nakai gets upset.
Nakai: It is T, isn’t it?
Kimura: Mine says Takuya.
Katori: It says Shingo.
Katori: (Taking Tuyoshi Kusanagi’s CD) This is a little suspicious. Look, Tsuyo…
Kusanagi: No, no, look at this. This is actually great. My name continues to the sleeve of the CD.
Members: This is great!
Kimura: This is like Wari-in (Note: Wari-in is a practice of dividing the impression of a seal over two sheets of paper), isn’t it?
Kusanagi: So, I find this unique and I like it.
Katori: (Still looking overwhelmed) So, (Michael Jackson) was really here.
Nakai: (Talking to himself) Why Takai?
Katori: I thought about the whole experience just now, in this room, and I think we should go on, making more efforts.
Nakai: You felt so, too.
Katori: (Looking at the CD) Thank you so much (Michael).
Nakai: I feel we could even go for a drink together (Note: It is known that they usually do not spend their private time together). You, know, “Let’s go for a drink together to celebrate!”
NARRATOR: Mr. Michael Jackson, thank you so much!
